Mozambique

Years of brutal civil war and extensive flooding in some regions, mean that Mozambique has barely 2,000 miles of reasonably paved roads.

An additional 1,500 miles are seriously undermined by potholes and huge washed out sections. Missionaries and other aid organisations lose precious time trying to reach people using four-wheel-drive vehicles.

From its base in Nampula, MAF serves mission agencies, national churches, and NGOs, working with people groups such as the Makua, Makonde, Lomwe, Chuabo and Yao of northern Mozambique.

A journey that formerly required three gruelling days of travel by truck, now takes only hours or minutes by MAF aircraft, increasing the capacity for evangelism, Bible translation and support for struggling, indigenous churches.

Making the best use of precious resources is essential in a country where one in six children dies before the age of five.

With MAF’s help, humanitarian groups can more effectively help with environmental protection, literacy programmes, and agricultural and rural development assistance.

In just one year, the flying doctor service visited Gurué’s remote villages and was able to treat 3,739 patients, making house calls to those who were too sick to get to a clinic.

Professional medical treatment for people with AIDS, malaria, malnutrition and a variety of diseases was given to patients whose only option until then was to consult with powerful traditional healers.
