‘Nearly all the buildings are in ruins, and it will take a long time to repair or rebuild them.’

Deeram Khong, MAF’s General Manager in Myanmar

On 28th March, Myanmar was struck with a 7.7 magnitude earthquake, causing mass destruction across the country. The epicentre was in Sagaing Township – 16km west of the second-largest city, Mandalay. It was the largest earthquake in Myanmar in over 100 years, killing more than 3,600 people and destroying more than 10,000 buildings.

Deeram Khong, MAF’s General Manager in Myanmar, led the delivery of supplies to Naypyitaw and said it was heartbreaking to see the destruction caused by the natural disaster. ‘I was filled with mixed emotions as we entered the town – joy at returning after five long years, and deep sadness at seeing the immense destruction the earthquake had brought upon the once-beautiful Naypyitaw,’ Deeram said.

Together we can bring relief to the people of Myanmar who are suffering after this disaster. They have lost their homes, their loved ones. Help us help them.

When disaster strikes, MAF is the lifeline between people and the aid they desperately need. Donate today to get water and aid supplies to people in Myanmar.

People are sleeping next to the rubble of their homes

‘Many people are now sleeping on the floors of a monastery and some are sleeping right next to their ruined buildings with mosquito nets and tents under unbearable temperature raging around 40 degrees Celsius.’ – Deeram Khong.

Please donate today to help us provide relief and comfort to these people who have lost everything.

‘It was as if the ground separated for 300km. Bridges shifted, roads cracked in half, buildings collapsed, and the water table reportedly shifted leaving aquifers empty.’

The people of Myanmar need a quick response. Help us reach this week’s goal to provide a second water filtration system for the people in desperate need.

Clean water for an earthquake-hit community

Local families helped distribution efforts after MAF’s Disaster Response team brought essential supplies for hundreds of people in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw, and installed a filtration system to provide clean drinking water.

The water filtration system will ensure around 1,000 people have access to clean water.

‘They were very thankful and the community pitched in straight away to help us organise this stuff,’ said Rick Emenaker, MAF Director of Global Disaster Response.

The team is also distributing hundreds of food packs for families in need – many of these families are having to sleep away from their homes due to the damage caused by the earthquake.

One woman said: ‘We lost almost everything that we possess. Some managed to retrieve a few items from the rubble by the help of rescue teams. I’m now living with a few clothes in a temporary shelter at a monastery. We are grateful for what we are receiving from MAF.’

All contributions shall be applied to this project. If donations exceed what is needed for this effort, the remaining funds will be directed to MAF’s Disaster Response Fund to allow us to rapidly respond to the next crisis or other crises around the world.
