‘No treatment will cause sepsis and death!’

In an interview with South Sudan’s Eye Radio, Dr Ajak Makor of Juba Military Hospital said that he was shocked to hear that an eight-year-old girl — we’ll call her Grace — was suffering from a double fistula having been raped.

‘This little girl is traumatised,’ he told the Juba community, ‘and needs two treatments. No treatment will cause sepsis and death. This girl is living a miserable life.’

Dr Makor finished with an impassioned plea for donations towards surgery that would cost at least £8,000 (more than 20 times the average salary in South Sudan).

Panzi Hospital – 800 miles away in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – is the only place in Central Africa offering specialised treatment for rape survivors.

We’ve flown hundreds of women there, but never someone as young as Grace.

MAF Pilot Pieter Room was incredibly emotional. He flew Grace and her father to the DRC on the same day as his own daughter’s eighth birthday saying,

‘This is why MAF is here. We live in a broken world. We’re called to follow Jesus in restoring people’s lives.’

When Grace finally reached hospital, she needed two life-saving operations from which she is now recovering. We were honoured to fly Grace home, too.
(The man who raped Grace has recently been sentenced to 11 years in prison.)

Her father wanted us to say to you, ‘Thank you, MAF. May God increase the days of people behind this great work, which has helped my daughter.’
